Gratitude, Assistance, and a Request

  • sitting outside while it rains, enjoying a cup of tea
  • time with Trey's Aunt Nancy (Ancy Ancy as Britton calls her) and Grandma Betty
  • our first snow of the season
  • finding the receipt for a pair of shoes I bought and needed to return--somehow I ended up with two left feet, go figure...
  • walks around the block with Britton
  • finally! Britton participated in his "jumpin' class"
  • I'm in love
  • pandora
  • naked
  • dreams about blind date with Luke Wilson *sigh*

  • I joined Netflix this week. If any of you are Netflix users please let me know what you think of it and pass along any tips you might have about getting the most out of your membership.
  • Whether you're a memeber or not, please pass along the names of some of your favorite movies. I want to keep my Netflix Queue full so now's the time for me to try out some greats that I may not have seen before. What movies can you watch over and over? Or, which ones are must sees? I have a love of indy films and foreign films so bring it on...
  • As part of the 21 Day Challenge I will be keeping an art journal. Please pass along any tips, hints, or words of advice on keeping an art journal. I don't even know where to begin. Do I need to treat the pages first? Are there some materials that aren't good to use because of bleeding, etc.? Do you know any good instructional sites? What are your favorite tools? Anything you think a new art journal artist needs to know please pass it along.
  • I've been really into birds lately and have decided to get a new tattoo...of a bird of course. I'm wanting one for the top of my left foot. I haven't been able to find anything that I love so if any of you artists are up for a challenge and want to design the tattoo for me I'd really appreciate it. I'm not sure what I'm wanting. I just know I'll know it when I see it. I'm leaning towards stationary over in flight and cartoonish over real. And I think I want her to have something special about herself--like a crown on her head. If you're interested just let me know.

I loved Netflix! Had to quit for a while, but plan to go back. They were always very good to me, and offered a discount when I was too broke to keep them. How neat is that?
My favorite all time movies are: "The Bulletproof Heart," (I think there are two movies with this name - pick the one with Armand Astante) "Clay Pigeons" (a Joaquin Phoenix movie no one ever mentions), "The Ruling Class" and "Belizare, the Cajun." (I want to marry the main character) All are black humor. Not sure if Netflix carries them as all are old. Beware: most people who see the movies I recommend come back and tell me I am one sick puppy.

Great blog .. if you like foreign films, you've probably seen these already, but if not I highly recommend "Y Tu Mama Tambien" and Yi-Yi" .. be warned that "Tambien" is a bit racy, but very good

We've been using Netflix for awhile now...we do the unlimited for $9.99/month. I'd say we watch on average at least six a month. We only do the 'one film at a time' thing because we like to watch them together and J's not home that much, between his day job and gigs. Most recently: The Weather Man (Nic Cage), March of the Penguins, Broken Flowers (Bill Murray). You MUST see Murderball--amazing. I know you're the Oscars Queen, but we don't fork out theater dollars anymore, so all the Oscar-nominated film are in our queue. :)

I used Netflix for a long time then they raised prices without telling me so I switched to Blockbuster. It's been just as good.
Some recommends:
Domino (Keira Knightly as a tougch chick was kind of fun)
In her Shoes
Taking Lives
Playing By Heart
Just Like Heaven
Sliding Doors (love this)
Love Actually
Dark Water
That should get you started.

I hope someone gives you tips on the art journal cause I've been wanting to do one too.

How do you find the time?

I love birds. I draw them all the time (but am not suggesting you use my drawing as a tatoo :-) I'm simply writing to say I think it's a great idea (the tatoo and having an artist design one). I should have thought more about my own tatoo which I got without much thought when I was 20. It's supposed to be a rose but looks like a red tree. At 32, at least it makes me remember a time when I was brave enough to get a tatoo:-)Good luck with it.

Can't give you any advice about Netflix, but here are three movies that I love: Il Postino (I already insisted that you see it, and here I go again.); Firelight (starring Sophie Marceau - I just put it in my 4 things meme.); Tea With Mussolini (I've never heard anyone else's take on this movie, but I think it's remarkable.); and a bonus fourth - Possession with Gwynneth Paltrow. I think 12 people saw it when it was released, but I really like it.

Regarding the art journal - best advice, don't overthink it. Be playful and have FUN.

I'd love to get a tattoo for the top of my foot. That will be the next location.
We sell those teabags at work ~ they are lovely as is the little stand that comes along. And finally, when does the next 21 day challenge begin? I'm going to do something with sugar and exercise; not together though. (=

hello you,
let me think about the tattoo idea... it's a bit daunting to know it's permanant!
movies i just rented: "thumbsucker", "the squid & the whale" and "junebug"... the 1st 2 are similar and a bit dysfunctional family angsty young teenage boys (which i relate to b/c i have a little bro), but done in a real way.
the 3rd i have yet to watch, but gets rave reviews:)

ohmygoodness, i have so much to say! i'm starting at the bottom and moving up your list, k? too funny that you mention a bird tatoo! i've been seriously talking about getting 3 tatoos in the last week. two small- one of three stars and one of a clover (st pattys day baby), and one a little larger of a bird! unlike you i want mine pretty realistic and in flight. i have someone in mind to draw it. i'd like to help with yours if i can. what size are you looking for (although this can be altered with a copy machine). love the crown idea! super cute. do you want color?

as for the art journal challenge. i REALLY want to sign up- really really. however, i'm trying to be good and not overcommit myself so i'll wait until the next time. my tips for you- use a canvas paper or watercolor pad vs. a sketch pad. these pages are thicker and have a great texture. one thing you might consider doing is painting several backgrounds (colors) ahead of time. teesha moore has several tips on her website which you may want to check out also. have fun, and be free!

yay for netflix! we do netflix, too. i'd have to say the best thing for us is watching t.v. series- no commercials and you can watch more than one at a time if you're addicted. there are so many awesome series out there so i suggest looking into those. as for movies- crash, memoirs of a geisha... too hard to suggest movies when you dont know what the other has seen. ;) i suggest tv series.

have fun! xo

Netflix is great - no complaints. I am a netflix whore! Our queue is at 306 and climbing. Some movies I recommend:
Happy Accidents
United States of Leland
The Believer
Igby Goes Down
All the Real Girls
Hideous Kinky
Another nice thing about netflix - if you have friends that also are members you just need their email address and can add them to your account as 'friends' and see what they are renting, make suggestions, etc.
I unfortunately don't know anything about art journaling, but am trying to learn because I find it so inspiring to see all these art journals online and also want to try it myself.
Good luck with finding a tattoo - I have a small outline of a dove on my back that I got after my divorce.

Perhaps you've seen, (and some are already recommended), but I particularly liked: Amelie, Il Postino, Whale-Rider. Art journals are another country to me, but I really admire what I see in blogs among AW people. Good for you going for it and trying it out. Birds? Would love to see the tattoo, or even the design you do choose for it.

I really like netflix, though our dvd player is picking up on a lot of the scratches, not sure if it's just our dvd though. We are on the one at a time plan and get one about tuesday and then again on Friday, depening on if we send them back right away. We really liked "Wimbledon", and I always love to watch "amelie" and "lost in translation", we just rented "The Island" and loved it.

Hi Michelle! We LOVE Netflix -- it eliminates all the wandering around the video store trying to remember what movies you want to see. And the selection is better. Here are some recommendations: TV shows are a great thing to get, like The Wire from HBO, or MI-5 from
BBC, or even Project Runway which I've got now! Also, one of my favorites: Firefly, the Joss Whedon show that stupid Fox network canceled. For movies, have you seen Firelight? It's a beautifully romantic period drama starring Sophie Marceau. Also: Bride & Prejudice, a super fun campy Bollywood version of Pride & Prejudice. Have fun!

I used to be a member of netflix, and my sister still is. She did some research and learned that the more you rent, the more they slow down the queue. I have blockbuster's equivalent now, and haven't noticed a slow down, but haven't used it that long either. Good luck!

Also, I have a for you to look at, if you like. :)

yum yum yum-movies: millions, motorcycle diaries, city of lost children, amelie, chocolat, the big lebowski, all of pedro almodavar esp those starring paz vega, lovely and amazing, all about my mother, 13 conversations about one thing, so many more. love love love netflix, can't live without it.
art journal: gesso first, love moleskins just because of the elastic that keeps my fat pages contained. get the artists journal by lynne perella (sp?), many wonderful tips on altered art, burnishing images, etc. nick bantock (griffin and sabine) loves putting in those little envelopes i find so inspiring. gesso helps the paint stick. watercolor pencils fun too... i keep masking tape on hand at all times and tape everything in there. have fun!

I love indie and foreign films mostly and my favorite this year (and last) was Elling. A little Norwegian gem!
Art Journal. Gesso first if you plan on painting. And I had a love affair with these watersoluble pastels I found at Staples. Can't think of the name just now but they are fantastic. Very versatile.

The great thing about art journaling is that there are no rules. It's all about you and what's in your soul at that moment.

I do gesso my pages first (if I'm painting on them later), but I'm not using moleskin.
